Fall-proofing a home in an afternoon
Most falls happen in the same six places. Here is the walk-through our caregivers do on a first visit.

A fall is the event most likely to turn independent living into a hospital stay. The good news is that the risky spots are predictable.
The six places
- Bathroom: grab rails, a non-slip mat, a shower seat
- Bedroom: a night light and a clear path to the bathroom
- Stairs: handrails both sides, contrasting edge tape, no loose runners
- Kitchen: everyday items at waist height, no step stool
- Front door: a handrail and a bench to sit while putting on shoes
- Floors: rugs taped or removed, cables along walls
The habit that matters most
Footwear. Slippers with backs and grip do more than most equipment.
